Between the mid 17 hundreds and world war I both Egypt and Italy went through a period of foreign rule but through their perseverance and hard work they both became their own nations which gave the people something to believe in, thus giving rise to nationalism.
Egypt:
The Suez Canal
Napoleon Bonaparte arrived in Egypt in July 1798. he brought many savants and scientists to record historical observations.
When Napoleon left Mohammad Ali (an officer in the Ottoman army) rose to power with the support of the Egyptian people. He ruled from 1805-1849, and was considered the father of modern Egypt, because of his steps toward modernization. Ali began indstrialization of Egypt and directed the expansion of agriculture toward cotton production.
Khedive Ismail rose to power in 1863, and finished Mohammad Ali's process of modernization. He wanted to bring Egypt to the same level of culture, civilization, and development as Europe.
Khedive Ismail inaugurated the Suez Canal under Egyptian possession, which became crucial to British communications with India.
In August 1882, British troops raided Alexandria to suppress the uprising of the Egyptian people who were rebelling against the harsh rule of the Ottomans. Before they knew it, Britain had installed a pupet ruler, and served as virtual ruler of Egypt.
Soon, people began aiming at ending British occupation. Mustafa Kamel, Sa'ad Zaghloul, Mustafa El Nahas and many others strove to achieve two objectives: independence and constitutional reform.
In February 1922, Britain claimed Egypt an independent state.
In 1923, Egypt promulgated the first Constitution, and Sa'ad Zaghloul formed the first represenative government of Egypt.
Italy:
The unification of Italy is said to have started sometime just after Napoleon lost his power but did not become as apparent until prime minister Cavour created an alliance with France and the made austria go to war.
The French sided with Cavour of course and then they later with drawled just before Austria would have lost. The Austrians slightly recovered but the Italians, now with nationalism, started their fight for unification
Much of this achievement is due to the strong sense of pride the country men had for the area they lived in.
By 1871 the separate states of Italy had united to form the nation of Italy.
The Franco-Austrian war of 1859 was the main event that provoked Italians to rise up and take back their country from foreign rule. It inspired Garibaldi, an Italian revolutionary, to rise a group of men and take Sicily. With the success of this, the rest of Italy, except for Venetia and Rome, were free by 1861.
won control of Rome in 1870 after managing to gain control of Venetia after siding with Prussia in its war against Austria
Italy formed a kingdom that ruled under King Victor Emmanuel II. This led up to the first world war which gave rise to fascism (and later Mussolini).
